The Year of Rembrandt: books and tips

28 March 2019 11:50
Every year around two million eyes are focused on his best-known work, the Night Watch. In 2019 it will be 350 years since Rembrandt van Rijn died. Antique Style Webstore reflects on the most important Dutch master of the 17th century (and perhaps of any time).

Rembrandt (1606-1669) has left behind an enormous oeuvre. Not only his paintings are loved. He also caused a furore with his etchings and drawings, including many self-portraits. The scenes on his works sometimes seem just real and are full of events and human emotions.

Especially for the Year of Rembrandt, the new book miffy x rembrandt was made in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum. In the booklet we see the striking similarities between the works of Rembrandt and the Dutch artist Dick Bruna, the "spiritual father" of the world-famous rabbit Miffy. Rembrandt was known for his works with more details than you can count and the magical use of light and dark. Dick Bruna (1927-2017) on the other hand, worked very precisely in a geometric style. With clear colors, bold lines and creative surface division, his works became famous. But Bruna and Rembrandt both made people, animals and landscapes.

A special introduction to the art world

And that is just one of the aspects that match both artists. In miffy x rembrandt the similarities (for example the placement of shoes!) and differences are highlighted in a special way. A must to introduce the little ones with art, a wonderful collector's item for (grand)parents and art enthusiasts. At Antique Style Webstore, the book is available in an exclusive gift set in both Dutch and English.

Explore the Night Watch

More by Rembrandt can be found in The Golden Age Book (in Dutch), about well-known and less well-known Dutch painters in the seventeenth century. With around 370 color images, it is a book to exhibit on a table!

Want to see Rembrandt's art in real life? Special exhibitions have been organized for the Year of Rembrandt throughout the country and in various museums. Tip: on the interactive website https://beleefdenachtwacht.nl/en you can discover everything about the Night Watch (the official name is The Company of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh is preparing to march). This website also shows the ways in which the artist manipulates the gaze of viewers.
