Arts & Crafts is a movement that was started by William Morris (1834 – 1896) in the 19th century. It was an artistic, social movement and it strove to bring back craftsmanship and simplicity of designs as a response to mass production.

History Arts and Crafts

In this blog entry we will discuss the Arts and Crafts movement. This artistic movement was a big influence on the later Jugendstil and Art Nouveau movement. It was seen as important that products were both beautiful and useful. The movement strove to unite the designing and production process. People thought that the traditional products reflected the national morale: good products meant healthy and ethical moral standards. Writer and artist John Ruskin (1819-1900) was the biggest source of inspiration for the arts and crafts movement. According to him, the most beautiful elements in architecture were based on organic shapes. The arts and crafts movement mainly focused on the applied arts. Aesthetically pleasing utensils were made, such as, furniture, wallpaper, carpets, cutlery, ceramics, jewellery, clothing and books. Artistic home furnishings based on the Arts and Crafts movement are also available online at Antique Style Web Store. The items can be recognised by their pure, natural shapes in earthy colours. The most important thing is the traditional way in which the products have been made in combination with the stunning patterns and motifs that go great with classic and antique interiors. Enjoy the history and craftsmanship of the Arts and Crafts movement. Allow yourself to be inspired by the examples from this blog entry.

Art Nouveau and Jugendstil

The ideology of the arts and crafts movement quickly spread throughout Europe and the United States. At the end of the 19th century, the arts and crafts movement transformed into the Art Nouveau movement. Art Nouveau artists copied the ideas of the arts and crafts movement which expressed itself in the following characteristics: traditional, indigenous shapes and types of wood, natural and organic motifs, Japanese motifs and Celtic motifs.
