History

Delft blue earthenware is traditionally made in Delft. At the end of the 19th century, Delftware became very popular in a short period of time and it was at its peak in the period from 1650-1750, when there were a few hundred of active earthenware factories in Delft. The industry faded out around 1800 due to much cheaper earthenware that was mainly produced England. These days, there is only one factory in Delft that truly produces Delft Blue: De Porceleyne Fles or Royal Delft. The factory was founded in 1653 and can also be visited as a museum nowadays.
