Refined or porous earthenware that was shaped inside a mold, painted by hand and that is commonly covered with a glaze is also called Faience (or Plateel in Dutch). The word ‘Faience’ is probably derived from the Italian city of ‘Faenza’, which was known for producing much ceramic art in the 16th century. Faience has an interesting history within the Dutch arts and crafts. To this day, faience, both antique and new, has a fixed value and this is partly why it is popular among antique and art collectors.
Artistic, decorative earthenware
Until the twentieth century, the Netherlands had a large number of famous potteries which could be found in Delft, Gouda and Rotterdam among others. These potteries created earthenware, porcelain and egg-shell porcelain. World famous earthenware factories are Goedewaagen, Rozenburg, De Porceleyne Fles, Mobach and Koninklijke Tichelar Makkum. Especially during the Art Deco and Art Nouveau period, at the start of the 20th century, the Dutch arts and crafts movement flourished when it came to ceramics. Back then, artists who made beautiful, artistic decorative earthenware were attracted to come to the Netherlands. Sadly, many faience factories have disappeared. This is why the exclusivity of faience or Dutch pottery has increased. New reproductions of Goedewaagen can now be ordered online at Antique Style Web Store. These earthenware vases and bowls have been made in a skilful and authentic way and they will be a rich addition to any interior with an antique or classic style.
