Angels, cupids or cherubs have been used in art for centuries. The romantic figures were particularly predominant in the Renaissance period and later on in the Baroque period. At Antique Style Web Store, there are various gifts, pieces of jewellery and decorations available that are decorated with cherubs.
Angels in art
The cushions Angel Dream and Daydreamer feature the famous angels from the Italian artist Rafaël. The angels can be seen in the artwork ‘The Sistine Madonna’ from 1512, a famous work of art from the late renaissance period. During the renaissance, or in the period during the 14th and 16th century, cherubs were often painted or sculpted in artwork about religious stories and figures. Additionally, there is much attention for mythical figures in art and the perfect balance between a stately composition and movement is often sought. Knowledge of anatomy played an important role in this respect. Cupid of Amor is the help or divine, eternal son of Venus (Aphrodite), the goddess of love. This is why cupid is often a symbol for loved up couples and a common figure on Valentine’s Day. Finally, frivolous angels were commonly used as decorations during the baroque period.
Cherub, seraph and putto
Cherubs or cherubim are angels of the second choir, following the seraphim. Seraphim are angels of a high rank. This means that there are various names for angels and each angel has its own place in mythology or religion. There was, for instance, a cherub who guarded the Garden of Eden with a flaming sword after Adam and Eve were chased out of paradise. ‘Cherub’ is also used to refer to a winged putto. A putto or amorino is a chubby child figure who is usually naked and features in painted or sculpted artwork. When the figure has wings, it is called a cherub.
