Winged nocturnal creatures

You might expect that butterfly season is over now that autumn is here. However, there are species of butterflies that only emerge from their chrysalis in September. Autumn is also a busy time for other animals, especially after sunset...

Moths

As soon as it gets dark and we like to stay indoors, autumn moths become active. They then search for plants that are still flowering or other food, such as rotting fruit. Ivy still flowers late in the year, as do autumn asters and some butterfly bushes. By not clearing away rotting fruit, you can attract moths.

Butterflies were particularly popular in Art Nouveau (1890-1914), a movement that attached great importance to symbolism and mystery. The association of butterflies with metamorphosis and movement was perfectly in line with the social changes and industrialization that were taking place at the time. This led to spectacular butterfly art.

Decorating jewelry with enamel is ideal for creating wearable works of art. The transparent, shiny effect makes the jewelry literally shine. What's more, the color possibilities are endless. Glass artist René Lalique (1860-1945) became world famous for his enameled Art Nouveau jewelry.

Hidden existence

Due to their hidden and nocturnal lifestyle, bats are unfamiliar to many people and therefore either attractive or a little scary. During the day, they hide in trees and other well-concealed places. They are the only mammals that can fly. There are relatively many bats in the Netherlands. Most bats depend on insects that live in and around water. That is why they thrive in a water-rich landscape. During the winter months, bats hibernate.

Art Nouveau is strongly inspired by nature. Bats were a popular motif representing the mysterious and nocturnal aspects of nature. The symbolism also fits in well with the Art Deco style, which is more austere and geometric. The difference between the styles is well illustrated by the bat necklaces in our collection.
