Early spring

On 31 January 1890, Theo van Gogh wrote to his brother Vincent that he and his wife Jo had given birth to a son whom they would name Vincent Willem. Shortly thereafter Vincent produced an impressive painting of blossoming almond branches for his nephew: one of the first signs of a new spring. Theo and Jo received the canvas in early May and hung it in a place of honour in their flat, above the piano.

Spring is synonymous with new life.

The almond tree blossoms early in spring. The tree therefore marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of new life.

In Mediterranean regions such as Tuscany, southern France or Spain, you can see the trees and it is unforgettable! On bare, light brown or ochre-coloured slopes, small trees stand in a brilliant white veil with glowing flowers.

Vincent van Gogh lived and worked in France for part of his life and loved nature. He also drew inspiration from Japanese prints. The Almond Blossom shows us delicate and endearing forms in beautiful shades of blue!

Vincent van Gogh (Zundert, 30 March 1853 - Auvers-sur-Oise, 29 July 1890) is considered one of the greatest painters of the 19th century, although he did not receive this recognition until later. Today, Van Gogh is loved all over the world over for his painting technique, use of colour and emotional subjects.

More famous works by Vincent: The Irises, The Sunflowers and Café Terrace at Night.
